We Are Juxt Feature by Sunday Blues Edit

Sometimes you recieve an unexpected gift that just means the world!  I am so thrilled to have been chosen for a Juxt feature through the fantastic Sunday Blues Edit on Instagram.

Four gentlemen started the website and have done a lot of incredible work to promote mobile photography and bring awareness to the artform. I follow an artist on instagram who created a platform called “The sunday blues edit”  Her name is Rebecca @repinsk and she is a single mother of three who has suffered from depression for 24 years. Sunday was always a really difficult day for her for a variety of reasons…(please read her feature for The Sunday Blues edit on the Juxt website above) and in order to help her cope with her depression she invited instagrammers to post their own “sundayblues” offerings to the hashtag and at some point during the following week she would choose nine images that stood out from hundreds of entries and arrange them in a grid for viewing on her gallery. My work has been chosen before on these grids, and it always inspired me to create more.
Rebecca never knew that the hashtag would be so popular, and that others shared her sunday sorrows. Blues could be interpreted in anyway, with some artists submitting sad images, and some submitted blue toned creations or whatever they wanted to share. The important intention was that these artists could connect with each other, now people didn’t have to feel so alone on sundays. Rebecca has created a huge international community of mobile artists that submit their images for sundays. She also became so overwhelmed with viewing and choosing the sunday selections that she recruited another lovely artist named Izzy @elvisandme to help her manage and grow the platform.
Anyway, I’m honoured to have been choosen by these two fantastic artists and We Are Juxt.  Please have a look at the image they selected and my story.

My work can be printed too, but is limited to smaller sizes due to the lower resolution camera. If anything appeals I can help to size, price, and print the piece(s) you like.
Thanks!

One Happy Family!

The day of this family’s shoot, I woke up excited! I was very much looking forward to taking their portraits.

Then, I took one look outside and felt deflated. The sky was grey, and it was coolish outside. This isn’t a reason to cancel, but the wind was crazy. The element of unpredictable wind can make a fun photo shoot not fun at all for gals. Ladies don’t mind lightly tousled wind blown hair, but strong swirls are a game changer.  Luckily, just an hour before heading out to their gorgeous acreage home, the sky lightened, and the wind died down. Weather condusive for playing tag, throwing leaves around, and generally goofing off. The perfect finishing touch to spending some quality time outside together, was that hot soup on the stove awaited them!

These kids are pure Joy!

Stay tuned for a link to the full gallery of this family.

Nothing cuter than this puppy!

If you had a sweet puppy like this little guy, come on… admit it! You would be rolling around in the grass with him too. Dogs have a way of getting into your heart, and wrapping you around their little paw! This session was arranged for this family as a “New Puppy” gift. What a special way for canine owners to always remember their dog as a darling cute puppy.

Edmonton Rural Session

When this family hired me, they said they liked to get in their truck and go for a drive, sometimes not even knowing where the road would take them. I love this about them! It’s so fun to capture people doing what they love. We were so lucky to have this beautiful golden light. Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t lavish praise for this gorgeous baby child. He is such a delightful gem!!!

Instagram Fine Art

I have been asked by my friend Stacy Nyholt to share some of my photography at an upcoming design function hosted by a local Edmonton firm called Design Eye   Check them out!
My wonderful friend Gillian turned me onto Instagram on August 5th, 2011 and I really love it for it’s simplicity, international platform, and opportunity to be in touch with photographers of all levels. I love my DSLR camera too, but this media has really allowed me to think about composition in a whole new way.  The iphone camera is limited technically compared to a DSLR and it takes some patience to get the light right, and the focus. It demonstrates that a good photograph is not just the camera so much as the person taking it. Some of my favourite landscapes have been taken with my iphone. I have used both my 3Gs and my 4s with lovely results. It’s social media with the focus on phone camera images.
In instagram you can use fun filters, frames and blurs.  The app is free, and if you are feeling splurgy…snapseed is a fantastic, user friendly app for $4.99 that allows one to edit images.
Here are 9 of my images for a fun tag game on Instagram called #9ofpride

The REDress Project

My wonderful friend Stacy let me know that there were red dresses hung up in the trees all along Saskatchewan drive by the University of Alberta. She thought it would make an interesting photo opportunity. I was curious, so made my way over to photograph something out of the ordinary.  As I imaged the dresses, I kept wondering why they were there. All different sizes and styles, but all of them red. I was really moved by the contrast and loneliness of the dresses hanging in the woods, in the cold.

Later I researched and found out that Jaime Black a Metis artist has created the art installation to bring attention to the fact that over 500 aboriginal and metis women have been murdered or have gone missing in Canada. Walking by each dress represents one of these women. The art installation will be at the University of Alberta until March 5th. Here is further information on the artist and how you can support the cause. The REDress Project

Family Portraits: Laughs, love, & a braid dipped in hot chocolate.

I love these images, because this family really forgot I was there and simply engaged with each other. Catching up, enjoying treats and lots of laughter. These images were taken at Leva a fantastic cafe in the Garneau area. Thanks Leva!

Thank-you for trusting me “W” family! Enjoy.
